Room to Read

Room to Read partners with local communities throughout the developing world to establish schools, libraries, and other educational infrastructure.

To date, Room to read has affected the lives of 530,000 children. John Wood, Founder and CEO, launched Room to Read after a trek through Nepal. He visited several local schools and was amazed by the warmth and enthusiasm of the students and teachers, but he was saddened by the shocking lack of resources. Driven to help, John quit his senior executive position with Microsoft and built a global team to work with rural villages to build sustainable solutions to their educational challenges. Working from the conviction that education empowers people to improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries, and children, Room to Read seeks to intervene early in the lives of children.

With the help of the Big Moos sales, Room to Read recently erected new primary school facilities in Shree, Nepal. The Shree Primary School was established in 1960 with two buildings and a total of five rooms. While one of the buildings’ construction was left unfinished and with a leaking roof, the other structure was made of mud bricks, dirt floors, and sheet metal roof. The sheet metal roof rendered the building very hot in the summertime or very cold in the winter. Consequently, it was rarely used. With Room to Read’s assistance, Shree, Nepal now boasts two beautiful new facilities—with seven rooms and concrete slab roofing—for primary education.
